A torque converter is a coupling which relies on fluid hydrodynamic motion to transfer power from an engine to an automatic transmission. Manual transmission cars have a clutch disk(s) which disconnect(s) the engine from the transmission during a stop, automatic transmission vehicles use a torque converter for the same purpose.
